Introduction

If you are wondering how to effectively show the skills acquired during your non-formal education projects and activities and make them stand out in the YouthPass, keep reading: we have what you need!

Discover “Valued by You, Valued by Others“, the handbook written by Anita Silva, Darko Markovic and Paul Kloosterman.

This is a publication of the SALTO Training and Cooperation, published in cooperation with JUGEND für Europa, the German National Agency for Youth in Action and European Solidarity Corps.

The aim of the handbook

This guide aims to present the skills acquired by participants during youth mobility projects and make them stand out within the YouthPass.

Valued by You, Valued by Others” offers:

  • An insights on how to support learning reflection
  • Some useful tools for documenting learning outcomes with Youthpass

The process of writing this tool is in fact already a useful educational process on its own. However, often the YouthPass can also be a useful tool in job search or in other contexts of formal education where is required a demonstration of the acquired skills.

Through this handbook, the authors will be explaining the most effective techniques when having to present the acquired competences to others.

The guide

It is possible to download the guide in pdf format for free.

The document is in English and consists of 120 pages, but it is also possible to download the individual chapters:

How to download the handbook

The complete guide is available for free download on the official website of youthpass.

We recommend this tool to all participants who want to develop their YouthPass as effectively as possible, but also to youth workers who want to integrate these explanations in their projects.

The Youthpass Certificate

The Youthpass is a tool to support the visibility and the general acceptance of the competences developed by young people and youth workers (and other support persons) through their engagement in youth work and volunteering.

It works as a certificate that recognizes non-formal and informal learning in youth projects. So far over 1 million Youthpass certificates have been released across Europe.

The Youthpass Strategy

With the evolving societal challenges, changing needs of young people and, not the least, with the start of the new EU youth programmes in mind, the European Commission has come up with a Youthpass Strategy that better meet the needs of its stakeholders.

The strategy for recognition and validation of non-formal and informal learning in the European youth field:

  • describes the directions for Youthpass in order to maintain and strengthen its value in light of the changing needs and contexts of its target groups;
  • contributes to the implementation of policy processes to improve the quality and impact of youth work and non-formal and informal learning in Europe.

This strategy document aims at putting a basis for the work of the SALTO Training and Cooperation Resource Centre in developing Youthpass together with the European Commission and the NAs for the EU youth programmes. It also seeks to offer inspiration and a framework for cooperation with other organisations and stakeholders that wish to create greater awareness and visibility of the learning value of youth work and volunteering across Europe.

You can see the Youthpass Strategy document online.

Youthpass is part of the recent Erasmus+ 2021-2027 programme. It is the recognition tool for non-formal and informal learning in youth projects. The value of the certificate lies on the recognition of the experiences, being them volunteering, youth exchanges, trainings, courses and so on. It comes in the language of choice and can boost the CV for good.

It is available for projects funded by Erasmus+: Youth in Action and European Solidarity Corps Programmes. As so, the European Commission introduced the Youthpass to give recognition to non-formal learning.

Under the supervision and support of the organisation, the project participants can describe the activities they have done, along with the achievements and competences acquired. The Youthpass has recognition all over Europe, being thus a powerful and useful tool widely spendable. In this way it also supports the employability of young people.

Moreover, the responsibility to issue the Youthpass certificates to the participants, lies with the organisation that signs the contract for the Erasmus+ grant.

Youthpass 2021-2027

As already mentioned, Youthpass is part of the recently launched Erasmus+ 2021-2027 Programme. Moreover the legal basis for the ESC 2021-2027 refers to Youthpass among the Union tools to foster the recognition of competences and skills.

Therefore Youthpass will remain available for the participants of the youth field activities within Erasmus+. To confirm their participation and more importantly, to offer the possibility to describe the learning process and the developed learning outcomes when taking part in such Programmes.

The Youthpass Strategy finalisation is on the way. S.A.L.T.O., the European Commission, and other stakeholders are going through the following features:

  • the quality implementation of Youthpass;
  • setting its development directions;
  • contributing to better recognition of non-formal and informal learning in youth work and solidarity activities.

A further development that we can expect is an automatic notifications system that will accompany Youthpass users throughout their project. Plus a digital reflection tool for the participants.

The strategy will be available before summer 2021. It will aim for a broader visibility and understanding of the learning value of youth work and solidarity activities.
